National and Connecticut Gas Average Increases Overnight as Demand Increases and Supply Decreases

AAA Newsroom Background Shape
HARTFORD, CT (June 25, 2021) –Connecticut’s gas average increased overnight, following the national average, which also increased overnight. In its latest weekly repor new data from the Energy Information Administration (EIA) showed that gas demand increased while total domestic gas stocks decreased. Drivers are likely to see minimal fluctuations in prices through the weekend, however, increasing crude prices, while gas demand remains high, are likely to push pump prices higher ahead of the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Today’s national gas price average is $3.08, up a penny from one week ago, five cents higher than one month ago and 91 cents more than one year ago.

In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $3.10, up a penny on the week, up three cents since last month, and up 95 cents higher than last year on this date.

“Local gas averages saw a small increase toward the end of this week, much like the national average,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA Greater Hartford.  “With supply and gas demand in sync for now, drivers are likely to see minimal fluctuations in prices through the weekend.”

Crude prices continue to ascend due to optimism that vaccine rollout will continue to help crude demand recover. In fact, the price of crude crossed the $73 per barrel threshold this week for the first time in nearly three years. Daily crude prices have not been this high since October 2018. Additionally, crude prices were bolstered by EIA’s latest report revealing that total domestic crude supplies decreased last week.

As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:

  • Bridgeport - $3.17, up a penny since last week
  • Hartford - $3.07, up a penny since last week
  • New Haven/Meriden - $3.07, up a penny since last week
  • Norwich/New London - $3.12, up 2 cents since last week
