Pennsylvania gas to top $3, price spike expected in the spring

PHILADELPHIA, PA (February 15, 2018) Even though gas prices have dipped slightly in the last few days, AAA says they will take a significant turn in the next few weeks and spike in the second quarter of the year, with the average price of gas across Pennsylvania topping $3 a gallon.

“AAA experts say sometime towards the end of February or beginning of March we will start to see gas prices rise,” says Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Motorists can expect to pay as much as 25 to 35 cents more per gallon.”

As usual, Pennsylvania is among the top ten most expensive states for gas (6th), with yesterday’s average pump price at $2.85 for a gallon of regular unleaded.

If the projections hold true, AAA says drivers across the country and across the state will be paying the highest gas prices since 2014 – but not nearly as high as the peak prices that year which, here in Pennsylvania, was $3.81.

Northeast Gas Prices Likely to Increase More Than Most

AAA experts say the increase in gas prices will be notable nationwide, driven mostly by the rising cost of crude oil. But, across the northeast, pump prices will likely rise even higher. Why?

Blame Harvey. Because of the hurricane, many refineries that supply the northeast postponed their fall maintenance until spring, so spring production will be limited as a result.

AAA experts expect the second quarter to be the most expensive second quarter for gas since 2014 and, looking ahead, they say, the driving season will be the most expensive since 2014 as well.

AAA gas price projections are based on predictable market dynamics barring any unforeseen changes in oil markets, financial markets and/or the political landscape.
