Unhappy Holidays

AAA Urges Caution after One of Deadliest Weekends on CT Roadways

After one of the deadliest weekends of the year on Connecticut roadways, AAA is urging everyone – drivers and pedestrians alike - to slow down, limit distractions and take every precaution to avoid further tragedy.

According to the State Medical Examiner’s office, 6 people were killed in multiple crashes, including a double fatal head-on collision in Stonington and the death of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle in West Hartford.

“The so-called ‘happy’ holiday season will be anything but for the many family members and friends impacted by these tragedies”, says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “The fact that the deadly crashes happened at all hours and involved drivers, passengers and pedestrians, demonstrates the widespread cause for concern”.

There have already been almost 300 fatalities on Connecticut roads this year.

Given the hustle and bustle of the holiday season and the record number of motorists expected to hit the road over the upcoming yearend holiday, AAA is encouraging everyone to do his or her part to ensure are roads are as safe as possible.

AAA safety tips for drivers:

  • Slow down – despite the rush of the holiday season, it is critical that drivers take it slow and adjust driving behaviors for conditions
  • Limit Distractions, no cellphones
  • Drive Defensively – increase following distance and be aware of others on the road
  • Drive sober – this includes both alcohol and marijuana which, police say, is a growing problem on Connecticut roadways
  • Avoid getting out of your vehicle or walking on a busy highway. If your vehicle is disabled try to find a safe place to pull over and call AAA for help.
  • Use your bright headlights when safe to do so

AAA safety tips for pedestrians:

  • Cross at intersections
  • Walk sober – research indicates that it is often the pedestrian who is impaired when struck and killed by a motor vehicle
  • Limit distractions – look up and out when crossing roadways
  • Be as visible as possible - don’t wear dark clothing; wear reflective clothing when possible
  • When possible, use sidewalks
  • Walk defensively – assume you cannot be seen.
