Mayor Kenney Makes Vision Zero a Priority in Philadelphia During Budget Address

Recent AAA poll supports Vision Zero efforts to reduce traffic fatalities in Philadelphia through safer road design, education and enforcement.

PHILADELPHIA, PA (March 2, 2017) – Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney today reaffirmed his commitment to improving mobility and safety on our city’s streets, as well as ultimately save lives.

AAA Mid-Atlantic Statement:

“AAA Mid-Atlantic applauds Mayor Kenney for committing resources to improve Philadelphia’s roadways for all road users – motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians – by creating a Vision Zero Task Force and now dedicating $5 million over the next six years to help bring to zero the number of fatalities and injuries on our roads.  AAA believes that the traffic safety culture in Philadelphia needs to change among motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians alike as everyone, across all modes of transportation, needs to share the road safely and responsibly.  We should never think of crashes on Philadelphia streets as inevitable.  One death on our roadways is too many.  A Vision Zero policy, weighted in education, engineering and enforcement, is a step in the right direction and now clearly has the support of the Kenney administration.”

AAA 2017 Philadelphia Traffic Safety Poll Results

Recent findings from the AAA poll of Philadelphia-area motorists indicate that 85 percent (up 5 percent from a 2015 AAA poll) agree that it is important for motorists and bicyclists in Philadelphia to share the road together safely – the proposed Vision Zero policy in Philadelphia is a step in the right direction and clearly has public support.

In a recent AAA Philadelphia traffic safety poll (fielded in February), respondents expressed concern and support for local traffic safety issues:

• 85% of respondents think all road users, including motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians, are equally responsible for using roadways safely

• 84% of respondents agree that enforcement of traffic laws should apply to equally to all road users – motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians

• 53% of respondents do not view Philadelphia as a safe city for all road users to share the roads together

• Top concerns about roadway safety in Philadelphia:

  • Road conditions – 27%

  • Speeding/aggressive driving – 24%

  • Distracted driving – 20%

  • General disregard for traffic laws – 17%

  • Congestion – 6%
