Falling Rain, Falling Temps…Increased Risks

AAA Urges Motorists to Change Driving Behaviors with Change in Weather

With wet weather and falling temperatures in the forecast, AAA is reminding drivers that they are at greater risk for single vehicle crashes when roads are wet or icy.

“At the end of a mild, dry weekend, AAA wants to remind motorists of the need to change driving behaviors with the change in weather,” says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford.

The best way to ensure everyone’s safety when roads are wet or slick is to avoid driving if possible.

"So, for instance, anyone who can postpone their morning commute until temperatures increase slightly will be reducing their risk," Parmenter says.

If you must be on the roads, driving defensively is key.

“Especially with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is critical that folks slow down to ensure that everyone can get where they are going as safely as possible.” says Parmenter.

AAA offers these wet-weather reminders:

  1. Slow down.  Drive defensively and with compromised road conditions in mind.
  2. Increase following distance. In optimal conditions, drivers should allow 3-4 seconds to stop. When roads are wet, following distance should be increased to 8-10 seconds
  3. Make sure headlights are on and that your brake lights and taillights are clean and visible - not just so you can see but so you can be seen by others.
  4. Make sure tires are properly inflated and have a healthy tread.
  5. Never use cruise control in wet-weather.
  6.  Make sure windshield wipers work and don’t streak.
  7. If you do begin to skid or hydroplane, always look and steer in the direction you want to go.
