The Week
Pump prices fluctuated across the country during the week as crude oil inventories decreased and gasoline inventories increased. Local drivers saw slight changes as most areas in Connecticut saw a drop of a penny in the last week helped by higher East Coast gasoline supplies.
Today’s national gas price average is $2.86, down a penny in the last week, up seven cents in the last month, and up 97 cents from this time last year.
“We anticipate gasoline demand will continue to increase throughout the month as vaccinations become more widely available and weather turns warmer,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Hartford. “This will lead to fluctuation at the pump throughout the spring season.”
Today’s national gas price average is $2.87, up a penny in the last week, up 12 cents in the last month, and up 94 cents from this time last year.
In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $2.88, down a penny on the week, up seven cents in a month and 83 cents higher than last year on this date.
After hitting a 12-month high of $66 per barrel last month, crude has been priced mostly at the $60 mark recently. If crude prices remain low, even with demand increasing, it will contribute to less frequent pump price jumps. The market continues to weigh prospects for energy demand on the back of the rise in global cases of COVID-19. The bigger-than-expected weekly increase in U.S. gasoline stocks this week has also kept crude prices lower.
As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:
- Bridgeport - $2.95, up a penny since last week
- Hartford - $2.84, down a penny since last week
- New Haven/Meriden - $2.87, unchanged since last week
- Norwich/New London - $2.93, down a penny since last week
