Drivers Can be 'Thankful" for Falling Gas Prices

(But still the highest at this time of year since 2014)

HARTFORD, CT, (November 19, 2018) - The record number of New Englanders who will be driving to their Thanksgiving holiday destinations can give thanks for falling gas prices.

Even though gas prices in 2018 have been the highest in years, the average price at the pump nationwide - and here in Connecticut - has been falling steadily for more than a month now.

“While gas prices are still higher than they were last year at this time, they’re as low as they’ve been for the better part of this year and that’s certainly something holiday travelers will appreciate”, says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford.

The downward trend is typical at this time of year, when refineries have switched over to the less expensive winter blend of gasoline and demand drops off. If the price of crude oil continues to fall, drivers will see even cheaper pump prices as we close out the year.

Nationwide

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas at pumps across the country is $2.63 – that’s down 25 cents from just a month ago, but still about 8 cents higher than on this same date last year.

Connecticut

Here in Connecticut, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.88, down 14 cents from a month ago, but still 16 cents more than on this same date last year.

As usual, gas prices across Connecticut vary by region:

Bridgeport $2.97

Hartford $2.83

New Haven/Meriden $2.87

New London/Norwich $2.92

Where should you fill up on your travels?

  • If you are driving south for the holiday, Delaware has some of the least expensive gas in the country, with a statewide average right now of $2.28.
  • Headed north? Maine ($2.60) and New Hampshire ($2.65) have the least expensive gas in New England.
