AAA Mid-Atlantic: Pump Prices Flying High and Bleeding Green – Philadelphia-Area Gas Prices 14 Cents Away from $3.00
Last time Philadelphia-area gas prices reached $3.00 was in 2014
PHILADELPHIA, PA (February 5, 2018) The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Philadelphia 5-county area is $2.86, just 14 cents short of the critical $3.00 benchmark. The Philadelphia 5-county area last saw gas prices top $3.00 per gallon in November of 2014.
Today the Pennsylvania gas price average is $2.88 today, 12 cents shy of $3.00 per gallon, a benchmark last seen in November of 2014.
Since January 1, the gas price average in Philadelphia 5-county area is up 12 cents and 32 cents more than a year ago. The average price of gas across the state is up 14 cents since the beginning of the year and up 33 cents compared to this same time last year.
“The upward trend we are seeing in the price of gas in the Philadelphia 5-county area and throughout Pennsylvania mirrors what we are seeing across the country,” says Jana L. Tidwell, manager of Public and Government Affairs for AA Mid-Atlantic. “Strong demand along with steadily rising oil prices means drivers nationwide will continue to pay more at the pump through the end of the month.”
Gas prices in the Philadelphia 5-county region and Pennsylvania are also getting closer to their 2017 highs with Pennsylvania just three cents away from its 2017 high price of $2.91 while the Philadelphia 5-county area average is nine cents away from its 2017 high of $2.95.
National Gas Prices
The national gas price average has increased for the sixth consecutive week, landing today’s national average at $2.61. Prices are 18 cents more expensive since prices started the upward trend in late-December and three cents more than last Monday.
On the week, U.S. consumer gasoline demand hit nine million barrels per day. In 2017, demand did not reach this mark until early March, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).
