You've Got One Year to Get Real (ID)

AAA Reminds Flyers of the Need to Upgrade License for Domestic Travel

(HARTFORD, Conn.) – AAA is reminding Connecticut residents that they have one year from today to upgrade their license or photo ID cards to a ‘Real ID’ or, beginning Oct 1, 2020, they will need a passport or additional documentation for domestic air travel.

“AAA wants travelers to be aware of the deadline and to make the upgrade sooner rather than later to avoid the possibility of crowds and complications if left to the last minute,” says Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “The key to applying for the Real ID license is understanding what additional documentation is needed to verify your identity. We are here to help”.

The detailed Real ID document checklist can be found HERE but, simplified, what most applicants will need is:

  1. Two forms of ID – their license and a second ID such as a passport or birth certificate (original or certified copy). If your name has changed, you will also need a marriage license.
  2. Social Security Card or W2 or 1099 with full social security number
  3. Proof of CT residency in the form of 2 pieces of mail from different sources dated within 90 days

What is REAL ID?

The Real ID program is an extra layer of verification that stems from national security measures and increased federal identification standards resulting from the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the U.S. It is also intended to offer residents additional protection against identity theft.

Though the deadline for Real ID compliance is 2020, the Connecticut DMV has been offering this identity verification for customers since October, 2011.

The ‘verified’ or 'Real ID' licenses or ID cards are identifiable by a gold star in the upper right hand corner.

AAA DMV Express locations

In addition to DMV offices, application for Real ID licenses or ID cards can be made at AAA/DMV Express locations in Avon, Cromwell, Enfield, Manchester, Old Saybrook, Southington, Waterford and West Hartford.

Answers to additional questions about the REAL ID program and process are available at the above AAA offices or CT.gov/DMV.
