HARTFORD, CT (April 2, 2021) – Connecticut drivers haven’t seen much change, if any, at the pump in the last week. The national average increased by a penny while state and regional gas prices are very similar to what drivers were seeing one week ago. According to the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest report, demand for gasoline has increased and that, along with a decrease in crude oil and gasoline inventories, could slow or reverse that decrease.

“Less expensive crude oil prices put downward pressure on pump prices for the majority of motorists over the last two weeks,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Hartford.  “Less expensive gas prices could be around the corner, but if demand for gasoline increases, that trend may be short-lived.”

Today’s national gas price average is $2.87, up a penny in the last week, up eight cents in the last month, and up 90 cents from this time last year.

In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $2.89, unchanged on the week, up 14 cents in a month and 78 cents higher than last year on this date.

At the close of NYMEX trading Thursday, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil settled at $61.45 per barrel, 48 cents higher than last Friday’s close. Crude prices bounced around a bit during the week as oil markets reacted to an OPEC+ meeting that ended without any recommendations regarding oil production but did reveal an expectation that global oil demand would rise more slowly than previously predicted.

As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:

  • Bridgeport - $2.94, down a penny since last week
  • Hartford - $2.85, down a penny since last week
  • New Haven/Meriden - $2.87, unchanged since last week
  • Norwich/New London - $2.94, down a penny since last week
