HARTFORD, CT (April 26, 2021) – The latest numbers measuring U.S. gasoline demand indicate that motorists are filling up at near pre-pandemic levels. In fact, demand this past week was only 3% below the same week in 2019, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $2.91, up three cents on the week, up two cents since last month and 97 cents higher than last year on this date.

Both demand and supply have steadily increased in the past five weeks, but the increase in supply is slightly less than demand, hence the increase in gas prices.

Today’s national gas price average is $2.88, up a penny in the last week, up two cents in the last month, and up $1.11 from this time last year.

“The jump in demand combined with the small increase in supply pushed the state gas average up by three cents in the last week,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA Greater Hartford. “This average is almost a dollar higher than one year ago.”

Cheaper crude oil prices, which are mostly pricing at less than $63 per barrel, and stable and strong refinery utilization are contributing factors keeping increases incremental. On the week, 35 state averages increased with the majority seeing only one to three cent jumps.

As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:

  • Bridgeport - $2.97, up two cents since last week
  • Hartford - $2.87, up three cents since last week
  • New Haven/Meriden - $2.90, up three cents since last week
  • Norwich/New London - $2.94, up two cents since last week
