HARTFORD, CT (April 5, 2021) Connecticut drivers have seen little, if any, change at the pump in the last week even as gasoline demand rose 4 percent from the week prior, according to the Energy Administration’s (EIA) latest weekly report. Because of the jump in demand, gasoline supplies tightened and state gas prices averages across the country saw major fluctuations. On the week, states saw pump price changes ranging from an increase of 15 cents to a decrease of 3 cents.

“We anticipate demand will continue to increase throughout the month as vaccinations become more widely available and weather turns warmer,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Hartford. “This will lead to fluctuation at the pump throughout the spring season.”

Today’s national gas price average is $2.87, up a penny in the last week, up 12 cents in the last month, and up 94 cents from this time last year.

In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $2.88, down a penny on the week, up 11 cents in a month and 80 cents higher than last year on this date.

One factor that may help to keep the national gas price average below $3 per gallon is the price of crude, which accounts for nearly 60% of the price at the pump. After hitting a 12-month high of $66 per barrel last month, crude has been priced mostly at the $60 per barrel mark recently. If it stays low, even with demand increasing, it will contribute to less frequent pump price jumps. However, at the end of last week, crude started to see higher movement following a production announcement by Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries Plus (OPEC+).

As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:

  • Bridgeport - $2.94, unchanged since last week
  • Hartford - $2.85, unchanged since last week
  • New Haven/Meriden - $2.87, unchanged since last week
  • Norwich/New London - $2.93, down two cents since last week
