CINCINNATI, OH (February 2, 2018) –Another year, another Groundhog Day and Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow signaling six more weeks of snow, ice and potentially extreme cold temperatures. AAA urges motorists to stay vigilant, check their vehicles and ensure that they are prepared for winter driving. Hazardous storms and inclement weather are a factor in more than half a million crashes and more than 2,000 road deaths every winter, according to research from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.
“Winter roared in like a lion and it looks like motorists will not get a break any time soon,” said Jenifer Moore, AAA spokeswoman. “With a little preparation, motorists can reduce their anxiety level and perhaps save themselves time and money when dealing with winter weather.”
AAA has responded to more than 31,000 calls in the tri-state area since winter began on Dec. 21 with the majority of the calls related to battery and tire issues.
AAA recommends that motorists use a simple checklist to determine their vehicle’s winter maintenance needs. Many of the items on the list can be inspected by a car owner in less than an hour, but others should be performed by a certified technician.

Winter Emergency Road Kit
Now is also a great time to double check your winter emergency kit to make sure you have everything you need. This kit is especially important if you’ll be driving any distance and winter weather is forecast. The kit should include:
Motorists are also urged to check the status of their AAA membership in case of an emergency.
“Before you need service is the best time to check to make sure your membership is up to date, as it will be needed to contact AAA Roadside Assistance for help,” continues Moore.
