HARTFORD, CT (April 23, 2021) – Connecticut drivers were reaching deeper into their wallets as gas prices crept higher this week. The national average for a gallon of regular gasoline has increased by two cents while the state gas average is up by three cents. While local prices are between 85 cents and $1.00 higher than last year when most of the nation was on lockdown due to the pandemic, they are within two cents of the price drivers were paying in 2019.
Today’s national gas price average is $2.88, up two cents in the last week, up a penny in the last month, and up $1.09 from this time last year.
In Connecticut, the average price of gas is now $2.91, up three cents on the week, up two cents since last month and 96 cents higher than last year on this date.
“Local drivers are noticing an increase in prices at the pump this week,” said Amy Parmenter, spokesperson for AAA in Greater Hartford. “In comparison to one year ago when most of the country was on lockdown due to the pandemic, gas prices seem high but current prices are on par with what was seen in 2019.”
Today’s national gas price average is $2.88, up a penny in the last week, down a penny in the last month, and up $1.06 from this time last year.
Crude prices have stayed above $60 this week despite growing market concern that surging coronavirus infection rates in Asia may derail expectations for crude demand recovery. Additionally, the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) weekly report revealed that total domestic crude inventory increased last week, contributing to downward pressure on crude prices.
As usual, the price of gas across CT varies by region:
- Bridgeport - $2.98, up four cents since last week
- Hartford - $2.87, up four cents since last week
- New Haven/Meriden - $2.90, up four cents since last week
- Norwich/New London - $2.94, up three cents since last week
