The term “refresh” conveys a sense of renewal, offering a more positive perspective on home improvement than the usual stress of a major renovation, she adds.

Here are four easy updates you can make to transform your space—all without hiring a contractor.

Install smart lighting

One of the easiest ways to improve your home’s functionality is with smart lighting. While it might sound like a high-tech overhaul, you don’t need an electrician to make the switch (pun intended). In most cases, it’s as simple as swapping your standard bulbs for smart versions that sync with systems you may already own, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home.

The real value of smart lighting is its hands-free functionality, says Courtney Cole, a designer at TileCloud. She notes that using voice-activated or app-controlled systems can be a total game-changer, especially when you are busy juggling tasks in the kitchen or have your hands full.

Adjusting your home’s lighting with a single command goes beyond convenience; it’s a practical update that can help reduce energy costs while giving you complete control over the mood and ambience of your space.

Add a vapor fireplace

One easy way to elevate your home visually—without venting or gas lines—is to install a vapor fireplace, which uses ultrasonic technology to create the illusion of real flames through illuminated water vapor.

Harbinger recommends granite for its durability. "It's almost indestructible," she adds. She also points to quartzite as another standout option. "Quartzite is absolutely stunning and really gives movement, texture, color, and sparkle that you can't get from anything else," says Harbinger.

If low maintenance is the priority, engineered quartz remains a popular choice because it is nonporous and holds up well to daily wear and tear without needing to be sealed.

Switch to an induction cooktop

If you currently use a standard electric cooktop, switching to induction is a smart home upgrade for homeowners focused on safety, sustainability, and sleek design.

"It’s really great because it heats up water in a minute, and it shuts off the minute you take a pot off," says Harbinger, adding that this is a safer option for households with young children or someone with physical or cognitive challenges, such as dementia.

Beyond safety, induction also offers sleek design potential. Some modern systems can be installed beneath compatible countertops, allowing the stone surface itself to function as the cooktop. This eliminates visual clutter and supports a minimalist aesthetic.

"Induction cooking is a great new thing," Harbinger says. It’s especially relevant as more cities move away from gas in favor of sustainable electric energy sources, she adds.
