The Best Way to Clean Glass for Streak-Free Windows

When I’m cleaning dishes, I love looking out the window at the forest and wildlife. I’ve seen all sorts of animals—birds, squirrels, and groundhogs. One time, I even spotted a turkey sitting on top of my kids’ playset. But it’s hard to enjoy the view when the glass is covered in dirt or streaks. So what’s the best way to clean glass?

Here, experts share their top tips for keeping windows crystal clear—so you never miss a memorable wildlife sighting outside.

Common glass cleaning mistakes to avoid

Many people assume cleaning glass is a simple chore that doesn’t require much prep work or technique, but that’s not always the case.

“Most streaking problems come from using the wrong products or techniques,” says Cliff Gielow, president and owner of Lemon Bay Glass & Mirror in Florida. He recommends skipping newspapers or paper towels when cleaning glass surfaces because these supplies can leave lint and even cause micro-scratches.

Another mistake is using harsh ammonia-based chemicals, such as those found in traditional glass cleaners or multipurpose sprays.

“Not only can these cause damage to your window seals, but they are [also] dangerous to inhale,” says Derek Christian, co-owner of All Star Cleaning Services in Colorado. He adds that you can often get better results using a homemade, eco-friendly cleaner, such as a solution of one part vinegar to 10 parts distilled water.

The time of day you choose to clean matters, too. Direct sunlight heats the glass surface, causing the cleaning solution to dry too quickly and leave streaks, says Shari Cedar, CEO of AK Building Services, a commercial cleaning business in Florida.

She adds that using too much solution can lead to residue and smears. And if you’re reusing a cloth, make sure it’s clean. Dirty cloths will just spread dust around instead of removing it.

Essential tools and solutions for glass cleaning

Before you use a cleaning solution, Christian recommends first using your vacuum or a dust wand to remove loose dirt from the window. This step helps prevent debris from spreading across the glass while you clean.

Instead of purchasing store-bought cleaner, you can easily make one with ingredients in your kitchen. Gielow recommends a mixture of one-part white vinegar to three parts distilled water—emphasis on distilled. “Tap water can cause spots due to hard minerals," he explains.

To wipe the solution away, Cedar suggests using lint-free, glass-safe microfiber cloths.

Gielow adds that professionals typically use a strip applicator—also known as a scrubber or T-bar—to apply soapy water and loosen dirt on the glass. The tool helps lift grime from the surface before it’s removed. After scrubbing, you can follow up with a squeegee to dry the glass and achieve a streak-free finish.

The best way to wash glass also depends on the surface. For shower doors, “you can still use your homemade glass cleaning solution, but you’ll want to add a squirt of a degreasing dish soap,” says Christian, noting that this helps break down soap scum. For glass cooktops, he recommends using a paste of baking soda and water to help lift grease.

Pro-approved techniques for cleaning glass

“The best results come from correct technique,” says Cedar.

When using a squeegee, Gielow recommends starting at the top and moving side to side rather than up and down. He also recommends working across the glass in overlapping strokes. After each pass, he says to wipe the blade with a lint-free cloth to avoid recontaminating the surface.

For shower doors, Christian finds it helpful to use a sponge to lift the grime before following up with a squeegee. When cleaning a cooktop, allow the baking soda paste to sit on the grease for about 15 minutes. “Then, use a nonabrasive scrubbing sponge, and wipe it clean with a damp cloth,” he says.
