How Airplane Wi-Fi Actually Works—and How to Make It More Reliable
An expert explains how airplane Wi-Fi works, why speeds differ by aircraft, and how travelers can improve their chances of staying connected

As in-flight amenities continue to be purged like a bout of spring cleaning (so long, drinks and Biscoff cookies on Delta’s shorter routes), one that has actually expanded and improved over time is in-flight Wi-Fi.
Though not complimentary for everyone, lower Wi-Fi costs and cabin upgrades that include the service have made this modern convenience more accessible than ever. The in-flight experience is greatly enhanced when you can send text messages, surf the internet, and stream entertainment through airlines’ robust entertainment libraries.
Whether you’re traveling for pleasure or business, a good internet connection can make or break the start of a trip. We chatted with an in-flight Wi-Fi professional to break down how the technology works at more than 30,000 feet, as well as how travelers can maximize and safeguard usage on a phone, tablet, or laptop.
How does airplane Wi-Fi work?
Airline Wi-Fi may look and feel like the internet you use at home or in the office, but keeping passengers connected in flight requires a different technology—and a different set of considerations.
“With aircraft at 35,000 feet, banking, and often traveling more than 500 mph, delivering fast Wi-Fi to passengers on board is quite an impressive technological feat,” shares Laney Hind, director of airline programs at Viasat, a global connectivity company.
In most cases, in-flight Wi-Fi works by connecting an aircraft to Earth-orbiting satellites, says Hind. An antenna on the plane communicates with satellites in space, which then link to ground networks below.
“That connection is then shared with passengers on board,” she explains, “allowing them to browse the web, message, stream content, or work during the flight—much like using Wi-Fi on the ground.”
Why do internet speeds vary among aircraft?
While most airlines offer Wi-Fi across their entire fleet, the quality and reliability of the connection can vary widely depending on the route and aircraft. Speed is just one factor.
“One obvious variable is that many airlines have multiple providers, so the quality of the connectivity might differ by aircraft type,” Hind explains, pointing out that different planes may be equipped with newer or older generations of technology, much like phones or home broadband systems.
“Internet performance can also be affected by how many passengers are online at the same time in a geographic area,” she adds, noting that the depth of available satellite capacity along a plane’s route can affect connectivity. “The level of service the airline has selected for its in-flight Wi-Fi connectivity experience can be a factor, as well.”
Coverage can also depend on where a plane is flying. Some satellite networks are better equipped to maintain connectivity over long-haul routes or over oceans and remote regions, where traditional ground-based networks are less accessible, allowing passengers to continue using bandwidth-demanding applications such as Instagram and TikTok.
Is airline Wi-Fi safe to use?
There has been plenty of talk around the safety of airplane Wi-Fi, especially as many providers prohibit the use of VPNs that help to shield IP addresses and, as a result, sensitive personal information.
“The key to safe airline Wi-Fi is generally two-fold: using an established and trusted connectivity provider that is committed to keeping your connected journey protected, and passengers adhering to basic personal device hygiene,” explains Hind.
“Passengers can protect their personal information [even more] by sticking to secure websites and keeping their device software up to date,” advises Hind. “Using strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication where available adds another layer of protection.”
How can a passenger prepare for airplane Wi-Fi?
Few things are more frustrating than settling in for a long-haul flight and struggling to connect to the internet. Hind shares a few important tips to ensure smoother connectivity with airplane Wi-Fi:
Turn off privacy features such as VPNs or Private Relay
“These can unintentionally interfere with the way devices detect and connect to in-flight Wi-Fi,” she says. “If issues arise, temporarily disabling them can help ensure smoother access, faster login, and more consistent connectivity.”
Make sure your device is fully updated
“Also, switch to airplane mode once on board,” Hind adds.
It’s best to take these steps before boarding, as cellular service is often out of range or hard to reach after boarding. It also helps to ensure your devices are fully charged—or that you have a portable power bank—just in case there’s no working power source at your seat.
