Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia at the crossroads of Interstates 77 and 81, Wytheville’s location makes it an ideal destination no matter what direction you’re traveling from. The brick sidewalks and vintage street lights along the picturesque Main Street are as nostalgic and inviting as you might imagine leading from one unique shop to another offering antiques, collectibles and rare books. Great restaurants and craft breweries are sprinkled throughout downtown, all in the shadow of the biggest pencil anywhere. A great photo opportunity, this 30-foot iconic landmark has been on Main Street for over 50 years. Did you know that Wytheville is the birthplace of a First Lady? Edith Bolling Wilson, born here in 1872, was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson. The Edith Bolling Wilson Birthplace Museum is one of only eight sites in the country dedicated to the interpretation of a First Lady. A chic new boutique hotel, located directly across the street from the museum, is also named in her honor.

The ultimate road trip experience continues as you visit Wytheville’s numerous homegrown attractions beginning with Big Walker Lookout. Now in their 75th year, this roadside attraction features an old country store with hundreds of items made by local artisans, the best hand-dipped ice cream around and Old-Time music performances every weekend from May through October. Step outside for a breathtaking sight from the top of Big Walker Mountain, but for the more adventurous, climb the 100-foot observation tower for a panoramic view “where only the birds see more.”

Beagle Ridge Herb Farm will delight your senses as you stroll through the display gardens and rows of lavender. The herbal products made on site will have you browsing the gift shop for hours. You can’t miss Flying Flowers. This walk-through butterfly house is an experience like none other. Also in the area Fort Chiswell Animal Park is an interactive safari ride that puts you up close and personal with camels, zebras, antelope, water buffalo and a curious giraffe named Cheeto. Practically next door is West Wind Farm Vineyard & Winery, where you can unwind with a delicious glass of one of their small batch, family-crafted wines. An exciting evening of Broadway-style entertainment awaits you at Wohlfahrt Haus Dinner Theatre. This hidden gem serves up a hearty four course meal before the curtain raises on a high energy musical production.
