AAA’s Rules of the Road

Driving responsibly includes abiding by the following common-sense rules to help keep everyone on the roadways safe.

  • Obey speed limits. Drivers tend to overestimate the potential time saved by speeding. Moving at 80 m.p.h. instead of 75 m.p.h., you’d have to travel 100 miles to save roughly five minutes. Recent AAA Foundation research shows that even small speed increases were enough to raise a driver’s risk—and the risk to others sharing the road—of severe injury or death. Speeding can kill.
  • Keep your phone out of sight and out of mind. Stow your smartphone away, turn it to airplane mode, or activate call- and text-blocking features such as Apple’s Do Not Disturb.
  • Only drive sober. If you use marijuana, alcohol or potentially impairing prescription medications, then don’t drive. And if you’re going to drive, then don’t consume these substances.
  • Stay alert. Stop driving if you become sleepy because you run the risk of falling asleep at any time. Fatigue impacts reaction time, judgment and vision, causing people who are very tired to behave in ways similar to those who are drunk.
  • Slow down, and move over. Keep an eye out for situations in which emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility service vehicles or disabled vehicles are stopped on the side of the road. Slow down, and if possible, move one lane over and away from the people and vehicles stopped on the roadside.
