Unexpected Community of Travelers: Finding Family in Strangers Across the Globe

Finding Family in Strangers Across the Globe

As someone who’s spent the better part of my 20s living out of a suitcase, I’ve learned to embrace the freedom of calling everywhere (and nowhere) home. As a travel creator, my life revolves around documenting places, cultures, and moments. But what often stands out most isn’t the sprawling landscapes or iconic landmarks—it’s the people.

I often get asked, “Does traveling solo get lonely?”

Traveling alone can sometimes feel daunting, especially when loneliness creeps in. But I’ve learned that being alone doesn’t mean being lonely. Some of my most meaningful connections have come from moments I never expected—like when a stranger helped me find my way in a new city or shared a meal with me in a quiet hostel common room. These fleeting encounters have taught me how deeply connected we are, even in the briefest moments.

Embracing Vulnerability

Solo travel often looks glamorous on Instagram, but the reality can be far less polished. Moving from place to place without a consistent support system can be isolating. Yet, I’ve found hidden beauty in that very isolation—it’s the spark that pushes me to embrace vulnerability and open myself up to new connections.

One night in Thailand, I arrived at a market feeling overwhelmed by the crowd and unsure how to navigate the landscape. A vendor noticed me hesitating and, without saying much, gestured for me to try a dish she was serving. Her small act of kindness instantly made me feel seen, and I ended up sitting with her family, sharing a meal, and exchanging smiles. We didn’t share a common language, but it didn’t matter. That moment reminded me how universal kindness is; it’s a language in itself.

Some of my favorite travel moments started with admitting I was having a tough day or asking someone for advice. These small, vulnerable steps often create surprising depth in conversation or connection. Vulnerability also invites others to open up, allowing for real friendships to be born.

The next time you feel overwhelmed, take a deep breath and ask someone nearby for help or a recommendation. Often, the simplest gestures—a smile, a question—lead to the most profound connections.

Hostels and Micro-Communities

Hostels have been a lifesaver for me, not just as a budget-friendly option but as a hub for connection. Common rooms and scheduled group activities are built for community-building, making it easy to meet like-minded travelers.

On a trip to Bali, a group of travelers from my hostel and I decided to explore the waterfalls together, and I brought my camera to document the day. By the end of the trip, everyone had photos that captured the magic of that moment, and I had a new group of friends who felt like family.

Whether it’s a co-working space, hostel, gym, or coffee shop, sharing a space with strangers allows you to connect. If you’re unsure how to approach someone, start with simple gestures like a friendly smile or a comment about the space you’re in. Asking for a recommendation, like the best coffee or a favorite local spot, can also break the ice and lead to meaningful conversations.

While it can seem daunting at first to strike up a conversation, more often than not, I find that the people I encounter are just as excited as I am to find a connection.

Shared Experiences

There’s something magical about sharing a first-time experience with someone else, especially in an unfamiliar place. Whether breathtaking or challenging, these moments create bonds that are hard to replicate.

I’ll never forget a trip I took to Namibia with a friend I met at a hostel. We decided to split the cost of a 4x4 and drive through the desert. On one drive, we spotted a herd of elephants so close that it felt surreal. We just looked at each other, speechless, thinking, “What is life?” No words were needed—the wonder in our eyes said it all.

Moments like this one stayed with me, not just because of the beauty of the experience but because of who I shared it with. That feeling of awe can’t be replicated or recounted by anyone else. It’s in these shared moments of awe and discovery that travel feels most meaningful.

Acts of Kindness

Through my travels, I’ve learned that not every connection is a lifelong friendship, and that’s okay. Sometimes, the smallest, briefest interactions leave the most profound impact.

While in Tokyo, I struggled to navigate the subway system with all my camera gear. A local commuter noticed me fumbling with my map and, without hesitation, walked me to the right platform, entirely out of their way. We exchanged smiles and bows before parting ways, and though I never saw them again, I’ll never forget their kindness. They took time out of their day, their morning commute, to bring a young traveler some peace.

These fleeting moments remind me that even brief encounters can make the world feel smaller and kinder. They don’t always need words or grand gestures—just a shared sense of humanity. Look for opportunities to provide small acts of kindness to others—holding a door, sharing a local tip, or lending a hand. Generosity often creates a ripple effect of positivity.

Social Media: Connection in the Digital Age

As much as I love face-to-face interactions, social media has been an incredible tool for building a travel community. Platforms like Instagram and Facebook have allowed me to stay in touch with people I’ve met, follow them on their travels, and even turn online connections into real-life friendships. A simple DM, a comment on a post, or sharing a travel tip can often spark meaningful interactions, keeping those connections alive and vibrant over time.

After connecting with another photographer through Instagram DMs, we realized we would both be in Kyoto simultaneously and decided to meet for a shoot. That collaboration turned into a friendship, and to this day, we still cheer each other on from different parts of the world.

As a creative traveler, social media is an absolute staple in keeping me connected and inspired by the people and places shaping my journey. Platforms like Instagram can open doors to meeting fellow travelers, sometimes leading to incredible meet-ups or collaborations.

Returning to Familiar Faces

One of the most rewarding aspects of travel is reconnecting with people I’ve met along the way. Over the years, I’ve crossed paths with old friends in new destinations—like connecting someone in Turkey who I initially met in Egypt. These reunions blend the joy of exploring a new place with the comfort of a familiar face.

These connections have created a global network of people who feel like home, no matter where I am. It’s one of the greatest gifts travel has given me: a family that spans continents and cultures. Staying in touch with people you meet on the road through social media or messaging apps ensures those connections remain strong, often leading to joyful reunions in unexpected places.

So Take the Solo Trip

Solo travel has reminded me how deeply interconnected we all are. It reminds me that even when I’m far from home, I’m never truly alone. Whether it’s a stranger offering directions, a fleeting smile at a market, or a group of friends formed in a hostel, these connections remind me that the world is full of kindness and community. It’s in those unspoken acts of generosity and the willingness to reach out that we find the beauty of humanity.
