For US citizens traveling abroad, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is a small document that makes a big difference. It acts as an official translation of your US driver’s license to help foreign authorities and rental agencies quickly verify your credentials.

Valid for one year, IDPs are required or strongly recommended in many destinations, including Japan and parts of Europe.

Another important detail many travelers might not realize: AAA is one of only two organizations authorized by the US Department of State to issue IDPs to American citizens.

“Unfortunately, many travelers still unknowingly purchase invalid permits online,” says Jessica Leisenring, AAA Travel marketing manager. “Applying through AAA ensures your IDP is legitimate, recognized and accepted globally.”

There’s a $20 permit fee, and all applications must include a copy of a valid US driver’s license (front and back) and a passport photo. You can apply online, by mail, or in person at your local AAA Store.

Obtaining an IDP is an easy way to help ensure smooth, stress-free travels abroad.
