How AAA Premier Membership Saved Me with a 200-Mile Tow

I was driving in New York City when I started to hear a funny noise. Please, oh please, don’t let that be my car, I thought. With so many cars around me, it was a reasonable hope, but as I continued my journey and the sound continued with me, the answer became clear: yup, it was my car.

Searching for an unexpected car noise

The noise seemed to be coming from under the back wheel, so when I parked my car, I checked the tire—nothing loose—and looked underneath—nothing there either. I went on with my weekend and hoped for the best. I drove the car a few times and heard the noise only sporadically.

When I left on that holiday Monday, however, the noise was persistent. I didn’t feel comfortable driving home to Delaware, but I knew that even if I could find an open repair shop, I’d pay a fortune. Then I remembered that my AAA Premier membership includes one 200-mile tow per year. Phew! I was covered!

AAA Premier to the rescue

I called AAA, and the call taker’s first question was if I was in a safe location. I was. Within 20 minutes, a tow truck had arrived. Upon hearing the sound as I drove my car, the tow truck driver concurred that I should not chance it. Soon, we were on our way back to my preferred repair shop in Wilmington. The tow truck driver even pulled over at a rest stop so I could get a sandwich and use the facilities. There was no charge for the tow, but I did have to pay for the tolls incurred by the tow truck. Those were promptly reimbursed by AAA, though, when I submitted my receipt.
