AAA SCHOOL SAFETY PATROL

IN THE SCHOOLS

From 1920 to present day, the AAA School Safety Patrol Program plays an important role in helping young students learn and fulfill leadership roles.

The presence of a AAA School Safety Patrol wearing the familiar belt & badge is a nationally recognized symbol alerting motorists to drive carefully, for school children are in the area.

Now, more than 654,000 children throughout the country participate in the program.

In 2020, the AAA School Safety Patrol will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. As a peer to peer leadership development program, Safety Patrols are trained to recognize traffic safety and other hazards to assist in keeping fellow classmates safe on their journeys to and from school. To commemorate this significant milestone, we are asking all former members of the AAA School Safety Patrol to Share Their Story and submit short narratives that describe their past experience in the program. Safety Patrol Reminders

The official look of the AAA School Safety Patrol is the fluorescent yellow/green Sam Browne belt. Belts should be worn over the right shoulder and clasped in the front. Badges should be pinned on the shoulder strip of the belt, at chest level. The only time the badge should be removed from the belt is when the badge or belt is being cleaned. Repeated removal of the badge will eventually cause the pin to break.

Many famous Americans have held the position of AAA School Safety Patrol, including U.S. Presidents, Governors, Supreme Court Justices, Olympic Medalists, Astronauts, Educators, Executives and Community Leaders!

AAA Mid-Atlantic supports the program by providing patrol equipment, support materials, training and individualized school guidance. In addition, AAA sponsors Training Camps and recognizes Outstanding AAA School Safety Patrols at Award Luncheons throughout the AAA Mid-Atlantic territory.

The AAA School Safety Patrol Program may have evolved over the years, but the mission remains the same: "to provide a safer environment and leadership opportunities for millions of school children.”
