AAA’s Top Tips for saving money on gas.
- Maintain your vehicle: Take your vehicle to an auto repair shop for regular health checks. At AAA Car Care locations, Members get special discounts and free vehicle health inspections with all services.
- Check your tires: Underinflated tires increase drag and decrease fuel efficiency. If you’re in need of new tires, remember that AAA offers monthly tire discounts for both Members and non-Members.
- Sign up for AAA Shell Rewards: Save 30 cents per gallon on your first fill-up and 5 cents a gallon every time after that using the AAA Shell Fuel Rewards Program.
- Use a credit card with gas rewards: Many credit cards, including the AAA Daily Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card and the AAA Travel Advantage Visa Signature® Credit Card, offer cash back on fuel purchases.
- Drive smoothly: Rapid acceleration, hard braking, and speeding waste fuel. For most vehicles, optimal fuel efficiency occurs around 50 to 60 mph.
- Consolidate errands: While daily commutes can’t always be avoided, combining non-essential trips can reduce overall fuel use.
- Don't run on empty: Waiting until the last minute to refuel—or running out of gas entirely—can be costly and inconvenient (but if it happens, AAA 24/7 Roadside Assistance will help).
- Use the correct gas: AAA research shows many drivers waste money by using premium fuel when it isn’t required. Always use the octane level recommended by your vehicle’s manufacturer.
- Get the right motor oil: Using the manufacturer-recommended motor oil helps maintain engine efficiency and improve gas mileage. If you change your own oil, look for motor oil labeled “Energy Conserving” on the API performance symbol.
