Every car owner knows that regular preventive maintenance is key when it comes to keeping one of your most expensive and important investments running year in and year out. Responsible vehicle owners also understand that spending a few bucks now to fix a failing or broken part, however inconvenient it may be, can wind up saving you the headache of bigger, more expensive repairs later down the road.
One of the best ways to make sure you're staying on top of monitoring your vehicle's thousands of components for signs of wear is to have your mechanic put your vehicle through regular, detailed inspections when you visit the shop.
A multipoint inspection (MPI) is a detailed, comprehensive vehicle check performed by a mechanic. Consider it a physical for your car. Ideally, these checks are performed a few times each year so that you’re catching small mechanical and maintenance issues before they become big ones.
What does a multipoint inspection include?
While each shop’s methods and inspection points may vary, the typical MPI will consist of a thorough inspection and grading of different areas and components of your vehicle, including highlighting urgently needed repairs as well as repairs that may be required in the near future. Your automotive shop’s multipoint inspection checklist may include the following areas and components.
Lights and signals
Bulbs and signals are inspected to ensure they're in proper working order.
Fluids
Fluids such as engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, wiper fluid, and power steering fluid are checked for cleanliness and the proper fill level.
Engine bay
Under the vehicle's hood, belts and hoses are checked for looseness, cracks, and leaks. Filters are also checked to clear clogs and debris or to look for any signs of needing replacement.
Climate control
The air conditioning system is checked to ensure it blows cold air and that the cabin air filter is clean.
Wiper blades
Wiper blades are checked for cracks or windshield streaking.
Drivetrain
The exhaust, universal joints, constant velocity (CV) joints, brake lines, fuel lines, and transmission and engine performance are all inspected to ensure proper functioning. In manual vehicles, the clutch may also be inspected, and in four-wheel-drive vehicles, the transfer case may be inspected.
Suspension and steering
All components responsible for steering the vehicle and maintaining contact with the road are inspected, including tires (for damage and tread depth), shocks, struts, springs, ball joints, bushings, and vehicle alignment.
How much does a multipoint inspection cost?
Since each shop performs MPIs differently, costs can vary widely. Factors that may affect pricing include the mechanic or technician’s time spent on inspecting the vehicle (and whether it was a detailed inspection or a quick check), the make and model of the vehicle, the location of the shop, and more. You may even find a shop that offers courtesy MPIs.
At AAA Approved Auto Repair shops and AAA Tire & Auto Centers, AAA members receive a free MPI upon request with any paid service on their vehicle. AAA sends the MPI results via text or email, including with pictures and videos demonstrating what needs to be repaired or replaced. Or if the vehicle owner prefers, AAA can call to explain what needs service and why.
Be sure to get in the habit of asking your mechanic for an MPI when you’re planning a road trip, when seasons change, or when you’re looking to buy or sell a used vehicle.
