Moving can be an exciting, but stressful and hectic time. There are so many things to think about, organize, and pack. But while this could be a dreaded activity, it’s something you’ll probably do at least a few times in your life. By planning ahead, and following some of these tips and tricks, you’ll save both money and time, and your move will be smooth and a lot less stressful.
REUSE BOXES
When you’re prepping for a move, one of the first things you need to do is find boxes for packing all your belongings. While you can purchase boxes at stores like UPS, U-Haul, and Lowes, the cost can quickly add up. Save both cash and the environment by reusing moving boxes.
Ask coworkers, friends, and family if they have any old moving or shipping boxes they’d let you have. Also check out the “free” section on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for gently used boxes that others are giving away. You can even walk around your neighborhood and keep an eye out for boxes being discarded.

DONATE WHAT YOU DON’T NEED
Moving is a great opportunity to sort through your belongings and get rid of what you no longer need. Not only will it make the move easier, but also your new place will be less cluttered.
As you pack, go through items like clothes, books, toys, games, kitchen items, junk drawers, and other items in storage. Create three piles: throw away, donate, and keep. As you sort, consider whether you’ve worn or used that item within the past six months, or if you’ll use it again in the near future. If not, and the item is gently worn or used, consider donating it. You’ll be helping yourself and someone who is in need.
PACK A FIRST-NIGHT BOX
Don’t spend the first night in your new home digging through boxes trying to find your toothbrush. Instead, as you pack, create a box specifically for your first day/night. Include toiletries, a couple changes of clothes, some dishes and silverware, and anything else you might need before you work through all the unpacking. By having it all in one easily accessible place, you’ll feel less stressed on your first night.
TAKE PICTURES OF YOUR CORDS
Whether they’re all in one box or strewn throughout several boxes, it’s inevitable that you’ll have a sea of cords. Save yourself some time and hassle by taking photos of the backs of your electronics so you can see which cord goes where. Go one step further by using masking tape and a marker to label which cord goes to which electronic.
AVOID BUYING FRESH GROCERIES BEFORE THE MOVE
One of the final things you’ll pack is your refrigerator and freezer. Dealing with expiring produce isn’t a great way to start in your new place. Keep your fridge clean and organized by planning frozen meals for at least one-to-two weeks before you move. This can help limit food waste, both before and after your move, and will make packing the fridge less stressful.
When it comes to moving, preparation is key. Planning and preparing ahead of time helps you avoid stress and makes moving day a breeze for you and your helpers. Following these tips can help make your moving hassle free so you can start in your new place on a positive note.
