Inspiring Room Makeovers That Won’t Break the Bank
A designer shares simple, budget-friendly ideas to upgrade your room design—no construction required

Revamping a room on a budget doesn’t need to feel like a challenge. If you treat it like a fun puzzle, the process turns into an adventure—and the payoff is all the more rewarding. Central New York-based designer Natalie Greathouse, owner of Greathouse of Decor, shares creative tips for refreshing your space's look, feel, and function without committing to a full room makeover.

Focus on small upgrades for big results
Want to make a big impact on your room design with minimal effort? Try minor variations, says Greathouse. Swap out pulls or knobs on kitchen or bathroom cabinets (mixing both can create a custom look), update mirrors (or paint the frames), and add style and function with multipurpose lighting fixtures, she advises.
"Battery-operated wall sconces are another easy addition that adds warmth and customization to your space,” Greathouse says. “They fill empty wall space and look great on either side of mirrors, wall art, dressers, or mantels."
Shop your own home
Greathouse suggests using what you already have to stretch your budget and change a room's tone and appearance.
"By simply moving accessories around, you can give your home a whole new look at no cost,” she says. Items that work well when moved from room to room include vases, hardcover books (with their jackets off), faux stems, plants, small artwork, trays, small lamps, and decorative figures.
Add color and texture in subtle ways
An area rug can make a major statement in a room. Greathouse recommends choosing one with an accent color. Just make sure it compliments the wall color (unless you plan to paint) and that the rug is appropriately sized for the space.
Next, she suggests using that same accent color to create a cohesive look throughout the room. Instead of solid-colored pillows or lamps, try incorporating accents that mix in your chosen color alongside other tones.
"Using lots of neutrals with texture is another good way to achieve this," she says.
Color and texture can also come through functional accessories such as pillows, blankets, baskets, and plants. Tile accents, wallpaper, decorative molding, and color drenching—a design technique using a single color or closely related tones throughout a space—are also impactful ways to elevate your room design.
While painting is an obvious way to transform a room's appearance, Greathouse says it isn't always necessary. "For a different change, consider painting your ceiling, molding/trim, or wallpapering," she suggests.
Make updates intentionally and thoughtfully
Greathouse advises making home updates intentionally—and taking your time. Live with each change before moving on. See how it feels. Does it bring you joy? Does anything bother you? Adjust as needed.
Most importantly, Greathouse says, finish one space before starting another. This helps prevent your home from feeling unfinished or chaotic. Thoughtful step-by-step updates create a space that truly reflects your style and needs.
