1. GO BACK IN TIME AT THEVERMILIONVILLE HISTORIC VILLAGE
Walk through the Vermilionville Living Museum, Folklife Park and Historic Village and you’ll find early Acadian settlements and original structures dating back to the late 1700s. Featuring restored homes and a chapel, the village offers 23-acres of land to explore, all with the help of local volunteers demonstrating crafts, cooking and musical instruments from the period.
2. HIKE DRISKILL MOUNTAIN
Driskill Mountain is the highest natural summit in Louisiana and offers climbing, hiking and mountaineering. Fun fact: Louisiana is not only one of three states in the U.S. with its lowest point located below sea level, but its highest point, located at Driskill Mountain, is the third lowest in the country.
3. RELAX ON WHITE SAND BEACHES
Spend the day relaxing beneath the warm Louisiana sun at White Sands Lake, located just north of Covington, LA. The lake is spring-fed, keeping the water cool and clear. The attraction is privately owned, so tickets are needed for entry. The daily rate includes access to the lake’s water park, complete with trampolines, floating mats and water slides.
4. TOUR THE BLUEBONNET SWAMP NATURE CENTER
Dedicated to conserving Louisiana’s natural landscape and wildlife, the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center offers 103-acres of live animal exhibits, mineral displays and natural artifacts. Walk along the center’s gravel paths and you’ll find hardwood forests made up of a cypress-tupelo and beech-magnolia trees, all home to hundreds of bird species, otters, armadillos and foxes.
5. TAKE A SWAMP TOUR
Did you know Louisiana is home to more than three million acres of Wetlands? These swamps are a large part of the state’s culture and you can’t visit without touring at least one. Whether you choose to tour by foot, airboat or kayak, you’re sure to have a unique experience.
