2023 Review: Honda Civic Type R

If you dig the premise of the movie RoboCop, in which it’s hard to tell where the machine stops and you begin, you’ll like the Honda Civic Type R.

The key to this melding of hardware and human is under this high-performance four-door hatchback’s hood. The Type R’s 315-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine provides all the power you could ask for with a twitch of your right foot. The motor drives the front wheels by way of a close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox (no automatic transmission is offered) so smooth that each shift is oddly satisfying.

The suspension and brakes are just as good, giving the Type R razor-sharp handling and strong stopping power. It is, in short, an absolute treat to drive.

Factor in a handsome, well-equipped interior with legitimate room for four adults and a large hatchback opening with 60/40 split-folding rear seats, and it’s just as practical as its less sporty Civic siblings.
