The Subaru Legacy combines creature comforts with a dose of ruggedness in a reliable sedan. Interior trims are attractive and comfortable but also durable enough to handle the rigors of outdoor adventuring. It can stand up to a little dirt and even pets’ muddy paws.
In addition to seating for five with great headroom for rear-seat passengers, there’s 15.1 cubic feet of cargo room in the trunk with a low load floor that allows for easier stowing of heavy cargo.
All-wheel drive is standard, with a choice of two 4-cylinder engines delivering up to 260 horsepower. The base engine provides only modest acceleration, so consider the more responsive turbocharged option if performance is a priority. The Sport trim is our favorite, as it adds not just the more powerful engine but also a sport-tuned suspension system and dual tailpipes that look fantastic. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 30 mpg combined city/highway with the base engine or 26 mpg combined with the turbo. This fuel efficiency isn’t as good as what’s available in sedans that offer front-wheel drive.
Standard infotainment in the Legacy is a bit different from the competition with a pair of 7-inch touchscreens mounted one above the other along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and four-speaker audio. The two-screen configuration is a bit awkward and dated. All but the base trim get an 11.6-inch tablet-style touchscreen that’s much more intuitive and reason alone to go up at least one trim level. That infotainment upgrade also adds a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system that provides excellent sound quality throughout the cabin.
The Legacy features the latest version of Subaru’s EyeSight driver assistance system, which was upgraded last year with cameras that see more and systems that respond more quickly. The Legacy is available in five well-equipped trims.
