Set-Jetting in Ireland and Scotland

EXPLORE THE FILMING LOCATIONS OF SOME OF THE WORLD’S MOST FAMOUS SHOWS AND MOVIES

Did you know that Ireland and Scotland are home to famous filming locations from some of the world’s well known shows and movies?  So, whether you’re a Game of Thrones fan and want to head to Winterfell or love Star Wars and are excited to see a mystical island straight out of the movie, these destinations have some amazing locations to explore.

Doune Castle, Scotland
Dunluce Castle, filming location of popular TV show, Game of Thrones

GAME OF THRONES
You can see several filming sites when you visit Belfast, Northern Ireland and Scotland.  Visit Doune Castle in Scotland where scenes including the Stark family home were filmed.  Head two hours north of Dublin to find Dunluce Castle and Ballintoy Harbor to find the “Iron Islands”. And if you’d like to travel the show’s main superhighway, be sure to check out The Kingsroad and Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland.

Blackness Castle
Blackness Castle, known as Fort Wiliams on Outlander

OUTLANDER
Head to Scotland and you can walk in the footsteps of Claire and Jamie, reliving their storybook romance.  See Doune Castle, the setting of Clan Mackenzie’s Castle Leoch, the battlefield of Culloden and Kinloch Rannoch, which provides the lovely background for Craigh na Dun.  Stay at the Covenanter Hotel, guesthouse in the show where Jamie’s story starts.  Want to see Fort Williams?  That’s better known as Blackness Castle.  And Wentworth Prison?  It’s actually a palace… Linlithgow Palace to be exact, located a short train ride west of Edinburgh.

Malin Head
Malin Head, filming location of Star Wars: The Last Jedi

STAR WARS
If you’ve wondered where the final scene of Star Wars: The Force Awakens or where some of the landscape in The Last Jedi were filmed, wonder no more.  The beautiful and remote Skellig Michael is an island off the western coast of Ireland and is the perfect spot to re-enact those final moments from The Force Awakens.  Insider hint:  because it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, only 180 visitors are allowed each day and tickets go fast.  If this is on your bucket list, you definitely need to plan well in advance and you may want to consider booking an escorted tour that visits this unique destination.  The Last Jedi came to life at Malin Head, located at the northerly tip of Ireland.  Not only will you enjoy following in the footsteps of the Jedi Masters but you’ll also love the beautiful, unspoiled landscape you’ll find.
