Palm trees, crystal-clear water, and sandy beaches are a big part of the allure of jetting to an island for relaxation. But sometimes you don’t have time to travel far to recharge or the journey doesn't fit within your budget. Good news: There are US islands (other than Hawaii) to consider. The best part? These islands don’t require a passport.
Puerto Rico
Looking for a warm destination in the middle of winter? Head to Puerto Rico, an island in the Caribbean and a US territory. Puerto Rico weather in winter boasts balmy temperatures in the 70s and 80s. Want to catch some waves? Prime surfing time is in December and January, too. Domes beach is a surfer favorite and known for whale watching in winter (though it’s not recommended for swimming).
It's easy to get around in the capital of San Juan, but you'll likely want to rent a car if you plan to sightsee. Visit El Yungue, the only tropical rainforest in the US, for hiking and swimming in natural pools. (Note that hurricane season is from June to the end of November.)
Nearest Airport: San Juan Airport (SJU)
Saint Thomas, US Virgin Islands
Saint Thomas is one of the three main islands of the US Virgin Islands, a Caribbean island chain located just east of Puerto Rico. Saint Thomas has a cruise port, so there is an abundance of resorts and activities to enjoy. Put this island at the top of your getaway list if you want turquoise waters, sandy beaches, warm weather, and lively nightlife.
Rent a car to explore the island, partaking in such activities as snorkeling in Coki beach, or take in panoramic views of the north side of the island from Drakes Bay. Be prepared: The steering wheel is on the opposite side, and they drive on the left, just like in the UK, despite the island being an unincorporated US territory.
When you need a break from chilling on the beach or sightseeing—and if you love to shop—take advantage of the island’s duty-free shopping. Each US resident, including children, can take home up to $1,600 worth of tax-free merchandise. This is double the limit of other Caribbean islands.
Many US-based airlines offer nonstop flights to St. Thomas from major cities, including Atlanta, Boston, New York, Chicago, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Miami, and Orlando.
Arrival airport: Cyril E. King International Airport (STT)
San Juan Islands, Washington
If you're looking for a nature escape that includes hiking, kayaking, biking, and spotting wildlife, head to the San Juan Islands. This Pacific Northwest archipelago resides between Washington state and Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Only four of the numerous islands are accessible by ferry from the mainland: Lopez Island, Orcas Island, Shaw Island, and San Juan Island. Make sure to book ferry tickets well in advance, especially for the peak summer season.
For ease and convenience, stay on one island and take day trips to the other islands. Lopez Island is ideal for its biking opportunities, while Orcas Island is known for its year-round whale-watching and hiking trails. Several trails reach the top of Mount Constitution, which rises nearly a mile high and offers sweeping views of the San Juan Islands, the Cascade Mountains, and the Olympic Mountains. Kayaking is also a great way to experience the islands.
Closest airports: Seattle-Tacoma (SEA) or Bellingham (BLI)
Jekyll Island, Georgia
Looking for an island trip that caters to a variety of interests? Off the southern coast of Georgia, Jekyll Island offers something for everyone year-round, whether you're seeking a family beach vacation, a romantic getaway, or a golfing trip.
This is where some of the wealthiest Gilded Age families, such as the Rockefellers, the Pulitzers and Vanderbilts, spent time.
With 10 miles of coastline, Jekyll Island offers plenty of public-access beaches. St. Andrews Beach is a prime stop to observe migratory birds and playful dolphins. South Dunes has long stretches of shoreline, along with grills and picnic tables, perfect for family gatherings. Driftwood Beach offers a picturesque setting ideal for playful photo ops, with its ancient driftwood lining the shores.
If you love marine life, join a kayaking tour to paddle alongside dolphins, or visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center to see turtles up close and learn about their rehabilitation.

Block Island, Rhode Island

This island is a haven for bird lovers, with more than 250 species that are attracted to its diverse landscapes, including marshes, woodlands, and coastline. Visit the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge to learn about the birds and wildlife that call the island home.

Mackinac Island, Michigan
Want to experience a slower-paced island? Visiting Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time. In fact, car-free Mackinac Island roads allow travel only by foot, bike, or horse-drawn carriage.
Climb to the highest point of the island, Fort Holmes, for views 325 feet above Lake Huron. If you want a different vantage point, cycle or walk the 8.2-mile loop trail around the island.
If you love fudge, you must taste it in this renowned “Fudge Capital of the World.” Peek in shop windows to watch various types being made across the island’s 13 different fudge shops, and be sure to ask for samples.
