Summer in Jackson Hole: Where Adventure Meets Luxury
With Grand Teton and Yellowstone nearby, Jackson Hole blends iconic scenery, abundant wildlife, and elevated experiences into one memorable summer escape

While many think of Jackson Hole as a ski town, you might be surprised to learn that summer is this lush valley’s busiest season. With Grand Teton National Park at its doorstep and Yellowstone National Park a 1.5-hour drive north, the town draws millions of visitors each summer. Outdoor activities pair with alpine luxury accommodations, fine dining, and exquisite spas for an ideal mix of exhilaration and indulgence. All of it comes together to make Jackson Hole in summer as compelling as its legendary winter season.

A gateway to Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks
Jackson Hole sits between two bucket-list national parks, with landscapes that range from glacier-fed lakes and the jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Tetons to Yellowstone’s bubbling geysers, technicolor hot springs, and thundering waterfalls.
Taylor Phillips, owner of Jackson Hole EcoTour Adventures, describes the valley as a collection of incredible scenery, plentiful wildlife, and open landscapes. He paints a picture of driving through Grand Teton National Park with yellow arrowleaf balsamroot in bloom, bison moving across the foreground, and the Tetons capped with last season’s snow.
“Summer is also a more accessible season,” adds Trent Hultman, the tour company’s general manager. “You don’t need to don multiple layers, hats, and gloves.”

Wildlife encounters
Wildlife viewing is one of Jackson Hole’s defining experiences, with opportunities to spot moose, bison, and grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Guided tours streamline the experience and maximize time, with trained teams tracking and communicating real-time animal locations to maximize sightings.
While the chance for a close encounter is part of the appeal, ethical viewing is essential. Early mornings and evenings are best for sightings in summer, and maintaining distance is key: at least 25 yards or more from animals such as elk and moose and 100 yards from predators such as bears and wolves.
For more memorable sightings, venture out on foot or by car. Carry bear spray, travel in groups, and leave no trace to help preserve Jackson Hole’s wild beauty.

Whitewater rafting and scenic floats on the Snake River
The Snake River is the backbone of Jackson Hole in summer, surging to life with a combination of Class II and III rapids and gentle floats. You might drift by a moose standing in the water while a bald eagle flies overhead, describes Jeff Tibbitts, owner of Jackson Hole Whitewater. That tranquility contrasts with an 8-mile stretch of family-friendly rapids, with names like Lunch Can and Big Kahuna, where the adrenaline ramps up.
“Snake River gets your senses going,” says Tibbitts. “You can be excited and fully at peace at the same time. Access to gorgeous nature is a privilege.”

Additional outdoor activities
Classic Wyoming pursuits such as horseback riding, fly fishing, and attending the Jackson Hole Rodeo (held Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day) are big draws, too. Family-owned outfitters such as Mill Iron Ranch lead trail rides that end with T-bone steak dinners.
Jackson Hole also boasts miles of paved pathways perfect for cycling and walking with stunning mountain views. For a higher vantage point, take the aerial tram to the summit and stop at Corbet’s Cabin—a tiny mountaintop waffle hut known for its indulgent, made-to-order creations—for peanut butter- and bacon-stuffed waffles.
