While the Kia Niro may be unfamiliar to most people, its advantages make it worth getting to know. Like its predecessor, this all-new second-generation Niro is available with three different powertrains. Though the all-electric (EV) and traditional hybrid (HEV) models have their strengths, this PHEV version is probably the best choice for most buyers.

That’s because the propulsion system, built around a 1.6-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor powered by a larger battery pack than the regular hybrid, now puts out a healthy 180 hp. Acceleration is noticeably improved, but more impressive are EPA estimates that the Niro PHEV can travel up to 33 miles on battery power alone.

Figure in a roomy interior filled with attractive standard features and Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, and you have a compact crossover that you’ll want to learn more about.
