Perhaps the best way to think about the Mazda CX-90 crossover is as a super-size version of the automaker’s long-running two-seat Miata sports car.

Of course, that’s an exaggeration since we’re talking about a midsize SUV with room for up to seven. Take it for a spin, however, and you’ll discover the Miata comparison is not as much of a stretch as it may appear. Heading off down a winding stretch of road, you’ll find the CX-90 delivers responsive handling that makes it feel light on its feet. The best choice for some buyers may be the top-of-the-line version that I tested, which was smoothly propelled by its newest all-wheel-drive power train—a fuel-efficient 323 hp partial-hybrid setup that can motor along on battery power alone for up to 26 miles.

Figure in an attractive passenger cabin with adult-size room in the first and second rows and a cargo capacity of 75.2 cubic feet, and you have a practical midsize crossover that feels almost sporty.
