In many ways, the all-new full-size Toyota Crown is a throwback to a time when cars had both heft and distinctive styling. That said, this vehicle is hard to label because it mashes up so many of the defining characteristics of current automotive categories.
The Crown looks a lot like a traditional sedan that’s been puffed up on sport-utility steroids. The optional 21-inch alloy wheels add to this effect. Slide behind the steering wheel, and the high seating position and spacious cabin will immediately make you think crossover SUV. Ride quality and handling are equally uncommon, with a luxury-like suspension that’s built more for comfort than speed.
Add a pair of available hybrid power trains (256 hp is standard on most models; the Platinum trim I drove is rated 340 hp), all-wheel drive, expansive digital dash displays and a long line of advanced safety features, and you have a new model that will feel oddly familiar.
