If its been a while since you bought a new or used car, you’ll find that there have been changes to auto buying that may be unfamiliar, like purchasing online without ever visiting a dealership. While the process may seem unusual, if you’re properly prepared, it can be much more convenient. Here are some things you should keep in mind when buying a vehicle online.

Experiencing the Vehicle

In many cases, you won’t be able to see, hear, inspect or drive the vehicle before you purchase online. Often, the only information you’ll have to go on are pictures and vehicle history reports. Some online dealerships, however, will allow test drives. They may be willing to deliver the vehicle to a location of your choice so you can see and drive the vehicle before purchase. If you are interested, be sure to ask if this is an option.

Limited Negotiation

While some consumers may delight in the back and forth of negotiating terms, conditions and perks so they can feel like they’re getting the best deal possible, others simply prefer to know they’re paying the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, known as MSRP, for the vehicle. Thankfully, with plenty of online resources like Edmunds, Kelley Blue Book and manufacturers’ websites, setting and sticking to price expectations is easier than ever before.

Comfort and Convenience

Whether you are pricing and comparing features between various makes and models or trying to find the best financing, you can do it all from the comfort of your home. Not only does this let you proceed through the purchase process at your own pace, but it also allows you to feel more knowledgeable and confident once you are ready to pull the trigger. Of course, this convenience comes at a price, which is limited face-to-face interaction with informed salespeople who can answer questions as they arise.

Financing

As with in-person car purchasing, it’s best to shop around for the best loan rate and get preapproved by a bank, credit union or other lender before you approach the online dealer. Not only does that help you determine what you’re willing to pay for the car, but it also gives the online dealership a rate to beat if they want to finance the vehicle.

Delivery and Return

As online purchasing has become more common, many retailers offer home delivery of newly purchased vehicles as well as flexible return policies.

Whether you purchase in-person or online, doing your research, understanding your expectations and asking questions will help to ensure youre happy with your new ride.
