How Many Tows with AAA Do You Get Per Year?
Find out how many times a year you can use AAA Roadside Assistance, all about AAA towing rules, other AAA road services, and more

Most AAA members—even most drivers—know that AAA membership covers towing, tire changes, battery jumps, and more. One question people have is this: how many AAA calls per year can they make? Or, how many times per year can they use AAA towing? Here, you’ll see exactly how many AAA Roadside Assistance service calls you can use each year as well as a breakdown of AAA towing rules and how to get an extra roadside assistance call each year.
How many times can You use AAA Roadside Assistance each year?
According to AAA’s benefit guide, all AAA members are entitled to 4 emergency road service calls per membership year, which begins when you join and resets on your renewal date.
This includes all members on each membership—so, if your membership has 4 members, each individual member can use up to 4 service calls per membership year.
What is a membership year?
AAA memberships renew annually, and your renewal date will always be on the first day of the month. Your membership year is the 12-month period between renewal dates.
Let’s say you sign up for AAA on July 15th. Your membership would start right away (some services require a 7-day waiting period), but your renewal date would be August 1st of the following year. Any year after joining, your membership year would begin on August 1st and end on July 31st.
What is considered a service call?
AAA’s benefit guide defines the following individual service requests as service calls:
- Towing requests
- Battery calls (Including battery tests, jump starts, and battery changes)
- Tire changes
- Vehicle lock-outs
- Emergency gas delivery
- Extrication service
- Bicycle calls
Can You get extra service calls?
Every AAA member is entitled to 4 service calls per membership year, but each membership level (Classic, Plus, and Premier) offers increased towing mileage and benefits with each membership upgrade.
The first way to get an extra service call is to upgrade to a Premier membership. Premier-level members—according to AAA’s Member Benefit Guide—are “entitled to five (5) Emergency Roadside Service Calls per membership year.” The 5th service call can be used for a one-time towing service of up to 200 miles per member, per membership year.
The second way to get an extra service call is to enroll your membership in automatic renewal. If you call Member Services at 866-636-2377, a representative can add automatic renewal to your membership—giving you one extra service call for every year as long as you keep your membership on automatic renewal.
This means that about one month before your renewal date, AAA will automatically charge your dues to the credit card on file. Every year that your membership remains on automatic renewal, you can use one extra service call per member, per membership year. There’s no additional cost associated with the extra service call and you can opt out at any time.
What happens if you go over your AAA road service limit?
Most people never use all of their service calls in a given membership year. However, if you go over your service call limit, you can still arrange for service at member-preferred rates, as stated in the Member Benefit Guide.
What happens if you don’t use all of your service calls?
AAA Roadside Assistance service calls do not roll over and cannot be shared between members. Every member gets at least 4 service calls per membership year, which reset on your renewal date.
If you break down, call AAA.
Request AAA towing or other AAA Roadside Assistance if you break down, and remember to sign up for the membership level that’s right for your needs. Visit AAA.com/Benefits for more information about what is included in your membership.
