How to Get an IDP or IADP with AAA
Why and when you need an international driving permit and how to apply for one

When you’re planning to travel abroad, you might want to ask yourself: Who will be driving? Public transportation, taxis, and rideshare services can only take you—and your wallet—so far for so long. If you’d like to avoid a transportation middleman altogether, consider getting an international driving permit IDP.
Here’s what you need to know about IDPs and how you can apply for one through AAA.
We’ll also discuss getting an IADP, or inter-American driving permit, and why you might need an IADP instead of an IDP.
WHAT IS AN IDP?
IDP stands for international driving permit. It lets you drive legally in countries that require one. It’s valid for 1 year and only in conjunction with a valid driver’s license. This means your driver’s license and IDP should always be presented together; an IDP can’t be used on its own.
WHY SHOULD I CARRY AN IDP?
You’ll need an IDP in countries that require one to drive legally, or you could be fined. If you don’t know if the country you’re visiting requires an international driving permit, search the country’s name using the Department of State’s website. It’ll mention if an IDP is necessary under Traffic Laws in the Travel and Transportation section.
An IDP can also be used as a valid form of identification in 150 countries worldwide. It translates your identifying information into 10 different languages. So, if you’re worried about language barriers, your IDP should help bridge the gap. At least, with the information needed to get you from point A to point B.
AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE AN IDP IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES?
Not always. For example, your U.S. driver’s license is valid when driving in Canada and Mexico. Here are a few scenarios to consider, depending on the country you’re traveling to:
- Some European countries will not recognize a U.S. driver’s license, but will officially recognize an IDP.
- Some countries will honor a U.S. driver’s license, but will require a local language translation.
- Some countries don’t require an IDP to drive legally, but local car rental companies require that you have one to rent a vehicle.
In all the cases stated above, an international driving permit covers you.
WHAT IS AN IADP?
IADP stands for inter-American driving permit. It lets you drive legally in countries that require one. It’s valid for 1 year and only in conjunction with a valid driver’s license. This means your driver’s license and IADP should always be presented together; an IADP can’t be used on its own.
WHY SHOULD I CARRY AN IADP?
You’ll need an IADP in countries that require one to drive legally, or you could be fined. According to the Department of State’s website, you will need an IADP if you plan on staying in Brazil, for more than 180 days. If you want to see if the country you’re visiting requires an inter-American driving permit, search the country’s name using the Department of State’s website. It’ll mention if an IADP is necessary under Traffic Laws in the Travel and Transportation section.
HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN IDP OR AN IADP?
It’s important to know that AAA is the only entity in the U.S. authorized to issue an IDP / IADP. Be cautious of any other websites trying to claim otherwise. They’re likely trying to scam you out of money and your personal information.
There are 2 ways to apply for an international driving permit or an inter-American driving permit with AAA:
1. Apply in person at a local AAA Store. IDP / IADP services aren’t available at all stores, so it’s recommended that you call ahead to check. Then, you’ll provide:
- A completed IDP / IADP application form.
- 2 identical passport photos (which can be taken on site at a discount for AAA members).
- A valid U.S. driver’s license.
- $20 USD permit fee.
2. Apply by mail. Send the following documents to your local AAA Store:
- A completed IDP / IADP application form.
- 2 identical passport photos each signed on the back.
- A photocopy of both sides of your driver’s license.
- $20 USD permit fee.
- Additional U.S. funds for expedited return mail service (if desired).
Pricing, processing, delivery, and sales tax may vary depending on location. To be safe, please allow 5 – 7 weeks to receive your IDP / IADP if you apply by mail; it usually arrives within 5 – 7 business days upon receipt of your application, though. And, keep in mind that an IDP cannot be issued more than 6 months in advance of when you will be driving overseas.
