Bees are buzzing, birds are chirping, and whether you’re urban or suburban, springtime has arrived – and with it, increased humidity.

From condensation on windows to musty odors and even mold growth, excess moisture in the house can lead to a myriad of issues. But this is an easy one: our experts have put together quick-tip strategies you can implement now to mitigate moisture and keep your home dry and comfortable throughout the spring into summer season.

air vent in bathroom

Ventilation is key

Proper ventilation is crucial for reducing moisture buildup in your home. Ensure that bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms are equipped with exhaust fans. If you’re in the mood for a very doable DIY, here’s how to replace and install your bathroom exhaust fan if its seen better days. Fans should be on while cooking, showering, or doing laundry to remove excess moisture from the air. Just FYI, there is also such thing as a whole-house ventilation system.

Monitor indoor humidity levels

A hygrometer monitors the humidity levels inside your home. Ideally, indoor humidity should be kept between 30% and 50%. We like this 4-pack for different zones of the house. If you find that humidity levels are consistently higher, consider using a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. Place dehumidifiers in basements, crawl spaces, or any other areas prone to dampness.

Seal air leaks

This isn’t just a must during the winter to keep cold air out; it’s a must in the spring and summer to keep warm moist air out. Inspect the home for any cracks or gaps where outside air can infiltrate — common spots are around windows and doors, as well as gaps in the foundation or walls. Seal these openings with caulk or weatherstripping. Check.

Air Conditioner system next to a house

Use air conditioning wisely

Air conditioning not only cools your home but also helps to dehumidify the air. Make sure your air conditioning system is properly sized for your home and is running efficiently. Keep windows and doors closed while the AC is running for the sake of energy consumption but also to prevent the outside moist air from getting in.

gutter drain system

Maintain proper drainage

Ensure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and direct water away from your home’s foundation. Poor drainage can lead to water seeping into your basement or crawl space, creating ideal conditions for mold growth and moisture problems. We like gutter guards to prevent clogs and extend downspouts to channel water at least 6 feet away from your home.
