Nothing prepared me for the vast skies, sprawling savannah and, above all, the magnitude and variety of wildlife that awaited me in Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania. I was smitten. Four trips later, I’m eagerly planning my next safari, and I hope these images will inspire you to venture on safari, too.

Elephants — Probably my favorite African mammal, the elephant is highly social and among the world’s most intelligent animals.

Giraffes — Photographed here in Kenya’s Samburu National Reserve, the endangered reticulated giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world.

leopard — After catching and killing an impala, a young leopard has ascended a tree to hide its dinner from nonclimbing predators.

zebras — With their dazzling, almost hypnotic stripes, zebras in groups provide endless photographic possibilities.

lilac-breasted roller — Although the lilac-breasted roller is common across sub-Saharan Africa, spotting one is always a welcome treat.

lion — Whether napping midday, stalking wildebeests or roaring on a moonlit night, a lion is a magnificent creature to behold.
