Not all automotive legends were born in the U.S. The diminutive Cinquecento, better known nowadays as the Fiat 500X, continues a tradition of small, practical Italian transportation that dates back more than a half-century.
Power for this subcompact crossover SUV comes from a turbocharged 1.3-liter engine that puts out 177 horsepower, enough for respectable acceleration. An all-wheel-drive system, meant more for peaceofmind in inclement weather than on dirt roads, is standard.
The 500X is better suited to everyday life than off-road forays in other ways as well. The suspension delivers ride quality that’s quite good, though handling is far from sporty.
The passenger cabin has room for four adults, but the rear seat is tight for taller passengers. There’s 14.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats; folding those seatbacks down, you end up with a 39.8 cubic-foot cargo hold that will allow you to schlepp larger items.
All in all, the Fiat 500X carries on the Cinquecento legacy for an entirely new generation.
