One of the reassuring things about buying a gasoline–electric hybrid version of an existing model is that the automaker has already worked out the kinks. Such is the case with the new Honda CR-V Hybrid.
  

This compact crossover starts with the many good qualities of the familiar CR-V and adds a hybrid system built around a 2.0-liter gasoline engine paired with two electric motors. Total output is a healthy 212 horsepower, a 22 horsepower bump up from the regular model. Power gets put to the pavement by way of a standard all-wheel-drive system.
  

In addition to the added oomph, this electrically augmented power train boosts the CR-V Hybrid’s fuel economy significantly. The EPA estimates are 40 miles per gallon city and 35 miles per gallon highway, a healthy gain of 13 and 3 miles per gallon, respectively, over the non-hybrid version.


Add a quieter interior, including a roomy back seat and spacious 68.7-cubic-foot cargo hold, plus a long list of standard safety features, and the CR-V Hybrid becomes an all-wheel-drive model that will serve you well year round.

  • While not the most fuel-efficient hybrid crossover, it’s still thoroughly likable.
