Sometimes things aren’t quite what they seem. Sometimes, that just doesn’t matter—as in the case of the all-new Toyota Supra.

You see, this fifth-generation of Toyota’s super coupe is actually a Japanese reengineered version of BMW’s new Z4 convertible. That means there’s lots of German hardware, ranging from its indomitable 335-horsepower, turbocharged 3.0-liter engine to the slightly confounding iDrive infotainment system that uses a large console-mounted knob to control everything from navigation to the radio station.

What this car is not is some mere curvaceous copycat. It is both uniquely handsome and deceptively quick. The adaptive suspension’s smooth ride gets much of the credit, as does the spot-on steering. Cornering is also excellent, thanks to a perfect 50-50 front-rear weight balance.

Add a comfortable, high-quality interior with all the latest tech features, and you have a very modern muscle car—regardless of where it came from.
