Unlike conventional cruises that tend to focus on leisure and entertainment, expedition cruises are designed for inquisitive travelers seeking immersive encounters with nature and deep dives into culture. These voyages often prioritize exploration, education, and conservation, sailing to less-visited locales inaccessible to larger ships. Leading expedition cruise lines such as National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions sails to more than 70 remarkable destinations around the world, from the volcanic landscapes of Iceland to the icy reaches of Antarctica and the legendary Galapagos Islands and beyond.

Here’s why you may want to choose an expedition cruise for your next adventure:

What is an expedition cruise?

At the core, expedition cruises emphasize active exploration over passive sightseeing. Instead of the  casinos and Broadway-style shows found on mega ships, expedition cruises present life-enhancing  for up-close wildlife encounters like observing breaching humpbacks and orcas (and feeling their spray!), kayaking past icebergs while spotting frolicking penguins and lazing seals, and snorkeling in some of the most marine-rich, biodiverse waters on Earth. You’ll also find expert lectures and field excursions led by some of the greatest minds in expedition travel. The focus of each journey is on meaningful in-depth discovery to foster deeper connections to the destinations. All the while, guests sail on small, comfortable ships that have less environmental impact than larger ships.

Life on board

The intimate ships accommodate 16-148 guests. Between excursions, you can attend presentations from seasoned naturalists and researchers to learn all about the environments you’ll explore on select departures. You may find workshops from National Geographic photographers to improve your photography skills, too. Ships are thoughtfully designed with observation decks for panoramic views and cozy lounges for lectures, discussions, and quiet moments. National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ new purpose-built polar ships are equipped with advanced navigation and stabilizing technology, including the company’s wave-slicing X-bow design, for smooth sailing even in challenging waters.

Active exploration

The fleet is stocked with tools for exploration, including Zodiacs, kayaks, and stand up paddle boards. Undersea specialists deploy Remotely Operative Vehicles, which can plunge up to 1,000 feet, to record video and present close-up encounters with wildlife and natural wonders that few have ever witnessed. Onshore excursions are carefully curated to provide authentic and respectful interactions with local cultures and ecosystems, engaging with local communities through guided visits to historical sites and participating in local conservation initiatives.
