Did you relocate this year for your career? If your job required you to move, you may be entitled to deduct the move from your taxes. Here is some information to help you determine if you qualify and what items are eligible for deductions.

ACCORDING TO THE IRS, TAX DEDUCTIBLE MOVING EXPENSES MUST MEET THREE CONDITIONS:

  1.  Your move is generally closely related to the start date of work in a new location (usually one year).
  2.  Your new workplace is at least 50 miles farther from your previous home than your prior workplace was.
  3.  You work full-time for at least 39 weeks, during the first twelve months, after you arrive in the general area of your new job location. If you are self-employed, you must also work at least 78 weeks during the 24 months immediately following your move.

WHAT EXPENSES ARE DEDUCTIBLE?

The IRS says you may deduct reasonable costs for moving your household goods and personal effects to a new home. These expenses include:

  • Transportation
  • Packing, crating and unpacking
  • Valuation coverage (for 30 days) and storage in transit for up to 30 days after items are moved from your former home and before delivery to your new home.

You might also qualify for tax deductions for reasonable, non-reimbursed expenses for the following:

  • Shipping your automobiles and boats
  • Transporting your household pets—dogs, cats, tropical fish, etc.
  • Connecting and disconnecting utilities for the move
