Distracted Driving
Distracted driving kills 9 people and leads to 1,000 crashes a day in the U.S. We don’t want you to be one of them.
Distraction can occur inside and outside of a vehicle. For example,
INSIDE: passengers, cell phone/portable devices, music/infotainment, food/drink
OUTSIDE: other drivers and people outside your vehicle, weather, billboards, wildlife, emergency vehicles.
There are 3 types of driver distraction:
- Visual – eyes off the road
- Manual - hands off the wheel
- Cognitive – mind off your driving
Eliminate as many distractions as possible for safety.

Tips to Avoid Distracted Driving
- "Do Not Disturb While Driving" to hold incoming phone/device messages and calls. Keep phone/device out of reach and sight while driving to avoid temptations to use it.
- Know your route and/or set up audible driving directions before you hit the road.
- Do know your vehicle’s features and equipment before you get behind the wheel.
- Preset climate control and infotainment.
- Secure items (purses, packages) that may shift and interfere with your focus while in motion.
- Be mindful of distracting passenger conversations.
- Pull safely off the road and out of traffic to eat, drink or groom yourself.
- Realize that driving requires your full attention. If your mind wonders – especially if you realize you haven’t been conscious of traffic conditions or surroundings, gather yourself and re-focus on the road.
