5 Easy Steps to Obtain an International Driving Permit
A quick guide to getting your International Driving Permit so you can drive abroad with confidence

If you're planning to drive during your travels abroad, an International Driving Permit (IDP) can help you navigate foreign roads smoothly—and legally—and the process of obtaining an IDP is relatively simple.
Let’s start with an overview of what an IDP is—and what it isn’t.
Many travelers mistakenly assume an IDP permits them to drive anywhere in the world. On the contrary, an IDP serves as supplemental identification that translates an existing state-issued driver’s license into multiple languages. Valid for one year from the date of issue, IDPs help local authorities verify a driver’s identity as well as their domestic driving credentials. That’s why many travelers choose to obtain an IDP even if they don’t plan to drive during their trip.
Now that you have a basic understanding of how an IDP works, you’re ready to complete these five simple steps for obtaining an IDP prior to departure.

Step 1: Find out if your destination requires an IDP.
Not all regions require foreign drivers to obtain an IDP. For example, US license-holders can drive without an IDP in many parts of North America and the European Union. Meanwhile, places like Japan and Italy are much stricter. Some jurisdictions require travelers to register their IDP with local authorities prior to arrival, so before you pack your bags, start researching the rules of the road for foreign drivers at your destination.
Step 2: Apply in person, online, or by mail.
You can visit your local AAA Store for assistance completing your IDP application while taking it with you same day. Alternately, the application is available at AAA.com to apply for online if you have time prior to your departure (processing and shipping time required). As a third option, you can call any AAA Store to initiate the IDP application process by mail.
Step 3: Gather all required documentation.
To complete your IDP application, you will need to provide the following documents:
Valid driver’s license
If your license is expired or suspended for any reason, you will need to renew it before traveling internationally and/or applying for an IDP.
Two passport-size photos
Your local AAA Store can help here, too. Photos must be recent and meet standard passport photo requirements (i.e., head on, neutral expression, good lighting, and a blank, light-colored background.
Completed application form
The IDP form is the same no matter which mode of application you select; you’ll simply need to provide the basic information and forms detailed above.
Application fee
The cost of an IDP is generally around $20, but be sure to check with your local AAA Store for the most up-to-date fees.

Step 4: Submit your application, and obtain your IDP.
To obtain your IDP on the spot, visit your local AAA Store where you can have your IDP completed in a matter of minutes during your visit. If a AAA Store is not close to you, applying online or by mail typically takes one to two weeks, which is less than ideal for last-minute travelers. With a little foresight, however, you can complete your application seamlessly and with plenty of time to spare.
Note: For mail orders, don’t forget to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your application materials.
Step 5: Keep your IDP with your domestic driver’s license.
It’s important to remember that your IDP is valid only in conjunction with your domestic driver’s license. If you’re stopped by authorities or need to rent a vehicle, you will need to present both IDs. So, carry them together to avoid complications and delays.

Obtaining an IDP is a simple yet essential step for travelers planning to drive abroad—and it provides peace of mind, even for travelers who tend to stick to public transportation. With a few key documents and a quick visit to your local AAA Store, you can secure your IDP and hit the global roads with confidence!
