Prices seem to be on the rise everywhere in today’s challenging economy, and airport costs are no exception. Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, there are simple ways to budget and save on those costly airport trips. Here’s how.

Flight prices

One of the smartest ways to save on airfare is by choosing the right airport—ideally one that balances convenience with lower ticket prices.

To help travelers make informed decisions, online lender NetCredit analyzed airfare data to reveal which airports have the highest and lowest average domestic flight costs. The least expensive airport is Orlando Sanford International (SFB) with an average fare of $125.79, while the most expensive is Jackson Hole, Wyoming (JAC) at $681.71. Other affordable airports include St. Pete-Clearwater, Florida; Phoenix-Mesa Gateway, Arizona; and Punta Gorda, Florida. In contrast, high-cost airports include Ted Stevens Anchorage, Alaska; Aspen, Colorado; and Charlotte Amalie, Virgin Islands.

Keep in mind that airfare prices can fluctuate as quickly as the stock market. In addition to choosing the most affordable airport, compare airlines, and be flexible with your travel dates and times. A small change, such as flying a day earlier or choosing a morning flight instead of an evening one, can lead to big savings.

Ground transportation

Booking your flight is just half the financial battle. You’ll also need to figure out how you’re getting to and from the airport. Doing a little research in advance can help you find the most cost-effective and stress-free option. Here are a few to consider:

Taxi or ride-booking services

If catching a ride with a friend or family member isn’t possible, taxis and ride-booking services such as Lyft or Uber are convenient alternatives. Just make sure to check prices ahead of time since fares can vary widely depending on the airport, distance, and even the time of day.

Airport parking and shuttle

If you prefer to drive yourself, airport parking might make sense for short trips or if you live far from the airport. Check the airport’s website for on-site parking options and costs. Also check out companies such as The Parking Spot, which offers secure lots near the airport and 24-hour shuttle service to the terminal—plus discounts for AAA members.

Public transportation

In many large cities, public transit can be a reliable and budget-friendly way to get to the airport. Buses, subways, and commuter trains often have dedicated airport routes. Just be sure to check schedules and travel times in advance to make sure it fits your itinerary.

Car rental

If you plan on driving once you reach your destination, you’ll need to factor car rental costs into your travel budget. Research which car rental companies are available at or near your destination airport, and reserve a car well before arriving at the airport. Also, keep in mind that AAA members get discounts with Hertz or Dollar, and remember to budget for gas.

Other airport costs

Beyond airfare and ground transportation, it’s easy to overlook a few other airport-related expenses that can quietly add to your travel costs.

Insurance

Travel insurance is always a smart investment to protect against unexpected issues such as flight delays, cancellations, and lost luggage.

Flight upgrades and amenities

Leading up to your trip, airlines may try to upsell extras, such as earlier boarding to secure overhead bin space. Consider whether the added comfort or reduced stress is worth the cost.

Baggage fees

Avoid baggage fees by packing light and sticking to a carry-on. Most airlines charge for checked bags on domestic flights unless you have elite status, which often waives those fees.

Airport meals

Food and drinks bought at the airport come with inflated costs. Save money by eating before you leave or packing snacks in your carry-on.

. . . . .

Keep these tips in mind the next time you have to book a flight. A little planning goes a long way in cutting back on costs associated with the airport. It helps you save not just on airfare, but also in the hidden expenses that quietly add up along the way.
