If you’re traveling with kids, it takes a little extra preparation for things to go smoothly—or, let’s be honest, as smooth as possible. Your packing list will vary depending on your children’s ages and your destination, but there are a few must-have items you shouldn’t leave home without. As you prep for your next trip, consider adding these essentials to help make your journey safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

Travel essentials for all ages

These are the packing list essentials that always make sense, regardless of age and where you’re traveling.

First-aid kit (including commonly used medications)

Being prepared for bumps, bruises—even the occasional fever—can make or break a day away from home. Keep a stocked first-aid kit in your car or carry-on, or at least tuck essentials such as bandages and antiseptic wipes into a pouch. A compact organizer, such as a tri-fold pill and storage box, is perfect for packing chewable children’s pain relievers, antihistamines, and anti-nausea meds.

White noise machine

From hotel hallways to unfamiliar nighttime sounds, a portable white noise machine can drown out distractions and help everyone get a better night’s sleep. Look for rechargeable or battery-operated models for maximum flexibility wherever you stay.

Portable power bank

When your phone or tablet is pulling double duty for navigation, photos, and entertainment, running out of battery isn’t an option. A portable power bank, such as the SKROSS Reload 5, can charge multiple devices at once, keeping your family connected (and your sanity intact) while on the go.

Portable high chair

Travel essentials for babies and toddlers

The littlest travelers need a few specialized items to help them—and you!—get through the journey comfortably. It’s helpful to mentally walk through their day: Where will your baby or toddler sleep? What will they eat? How many diapers will they need? Once you’ve covered those basics, make sure your packing list includes these essentials.

Folding stroller

Consider swapping your full-size stroller for a lightweight, collapsible travel version. Some even fold down small enough to fit in an airplane’s overhead bin—such as the GB Pockit All-Terrain Travel Stroller. Another option is an infant car seat that converts into a stroller, such as the Doona car seat/stroller combo.

Portable high chair

While many restaurants provide high chairs, they may not always be available in house rentals or at relatives’ homes. A clamp-on or portable high chair can make mealtime much easier when you’re away from home.

Blackout curtains

Packable blackout curtains can help little ones to adjust to unfamiliar sleep environments and routines. Look for ones with strong suction cups that attach securely to windows. If your little one still sleeps in a crib, you may want to consider a blackout travel crib, such as the popular SlumberPod.

Travel essentials for older kids

Once your kids reach elementary school age, traveling with them usually gets a bit easier—and the packing list gets a little lighter. But there are still a few essentials that can make your trip smoother for everyone.

Inflatable or compact booster seat

If your child is old enough for a booster seat, you can finally leave the bulky car seat at home. (Hooray!) There are compact and foldable booster seats—and even inflatable booster seat options—that are perfect for travel. They’re easy to pack and install to keep your child safe in the car. Just make sure to check the car seat and booster laws for your destination ahead of time as regulations can vary widely by state and country.

Headphones

Whether they’re watching a movie on a tablet in the backseat or enjoying seatback entertainment on a flight, headphones are a must. Many airlines now require them if your child is using an onboard screen or device. Look for headphones designed specifically for kids; some come with built-in volume limits to protect young ears and wireless Bluetooth options to help reducecord clutter, such as iClever Kids Bluetooth headphones. Bonus: Some models even help reduce pressure buildup during flights, which can help prevent those dreaded earaches.

Kid-size backpack or carry-on suitcase

If your child is old enough to carry their own stuff, giving them a comfortable, lightweight bag can be a game changer. Look for something age-appropriate—ideally small enough for them to manage but roomy enough to hold snacks, a water bottle, entertainment devices, and a favorite toy. Foldable options, such as the IdealTech backpack, are especially travel-friendly. You can tuck them into your luggage when not in use and pull them out when it’s time for your kid to carry their own gear.

ID bracelet or tracker

If you’re planning to visit busy places such as amusement parks or big cities, an ID bracelet can give both you and your child extra peace of mind. These bracelets can include a guardian’s name and phone number, making it easy for someone to contact you in case your child gets separated. There are plenty of great options—from simple waterproof bands to custom-made bracelets, such as the KidSafe Band by ROAD iD.

Wherever you’re headed, having the right travel gear can help keep the whole family more comfortable and secure—and a lot less stressed.
